We brought our GoPro into the water, but when we got back to the hotel to look at it, we realized it didn't pick up any of the luminous lagoon. The water was so beautiful and there were clear skies the night we went so you could see all the stars. If you are going to go on this excursion, you have to swim in the luminous lagoon!! Life jackets are provided if you are not a good swimmer or are scared, but if you are not going to swim, then I don't think it would be worth it. There were some people from our group that just stayed on the boat. Our captain drove our boat into the middle of the lake where we had quite a bit of time to swim. Once on the boat, we were offered soda or rum and soda. Our group was guided to get on the boat before it was over, but I don't think we missed much. When the sun started going down, they had an amateur dancing and entertaining show. There was also a tv where they had a video from a Damian Marley concert playing. We ordered some rum cream and the best coconut rum cake I have ever had! Although it was a bit expensive (~$20), I would buy the rest of that rum cake and forget the rum cream if I go again! While we waited, there were chairs in the grass where we could sit and chat. There was also a bar to order drinks and food while we waited for it to get dark enough to go on the boat. We took a bus to the Rock Wharf where there were locals setting up tables to sell their handmade items. Unfortunately we were unlucky tonight.Along with the adrenaline-filled excursion we went on the day before, this was our favorite part of our honeymoon! We booked the excursion to go here through our hotel Bahia-Principe with Scubaquatics. Typically the luminous lagoon illuminates with bright colors. They cooked an amazing array of Jamaican food for us, including Escovitch fish, Jamaican Steamed Fish, Bammy, mahi mahi in an amazing marinade, and finally King crab rundown! What a dish and what an outstanding place.įor our final activity of the day, we took a boat in the luminous lagoon once it was dark - but unfortunately due to weather conditions, we werent able to see the luminosity of the lagoon. Rock Wharf Luminous Lagoon - But our main goal for the way was to get the seafood, fish, lobsters which Matt brought, and the Caribbean king crab we bought, with us to the beautiful Rock Wharf in Falmouth, Jamaica. Its the way to get started on a Jamaican seafood feast. It was mainly fish bones and a few spices boiled until comforting and delicious. Amazing place, great hospitality.įar Out Fish Hut - North Coast, Jamaica - Next up we started driving down the North Coast of Jamaica, and made a quick stop at Far Out Fish Hut to eat a simple dish of fish tea. So along with the pepper janga (crayfish) and some jerk octopus, we also got a taste of ultra fresh escovitch barracuda. While we were there, a fisherman came in with his fresh catch including barracuda. Smokeez by the sea - Our first stop for the day was in Montego Bay, Jamaica, at a laid back chill out spot called Smokeez by the sea. We scored big with some amazing fresh Caribbean King Crab, which I didnt even know as a thing - and we had an amazing day of fresh Jamaican food! Rating: 4.5 Vote: 2 Jamaican Seafood - Today was dedicated to Jamaican seafood - and what a another memorable day in Jamaica it was.
His magnum opus, the Mona Lisa, is his best known work and often regarded as the world's most famous painting. Despite having many lost works and fewer than 25 attributed major works-including numerous unfinished works-he created some of the most influential paintings in Western art. Leonardo is identified as one of the greatest painters in the history of art and is often credited as the founder of the High Renaissance. Since his death, there has not been a time where his achievements, diverse interests, personal life, and empirical thinking have failed to incite interest and admiration, making him a frequent namesake and subject in culture. Upon the invitation of Francis I, he spent his last three years in France, where he died in 1519. Later, he worked in Florence and Milan again, as well as briefly in Rome, all while attracting a large following of imitators and students. He began his career in the city, but then spent much time in the service of Ludovico Sforza in Milan. īorn out of wedlock to a successful notary and a lower-class woman in, or near, Vinci, he was educated in Florence by the Italian painter and sculptor Andrea del Verrocchio. Leonardo is widely regarded to have been a genius who epitomized the Renaissance humanist ideal, and his collective works comprise a contribution to later generations of artists matched only by that of his younger contemporary, Michelangelo. While his fame initially rested on his achievements as a painter, he also became known for his notebooks, in which he made drawings and notes on a variety of subjects, including anatomy, astronomy, botany, cartography, painting, and paleontology. Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci (15 April 1452 – ) was an Italian polymath of the High Renaissance who was active as a painter, draughtsman, engineer, scientist, theorist, sculptor, and architect. In fact, I bake this so often that my freezer has an entire shelf lined with pre-sliced loaves wrapped and in bags labeled pane perfetto 2. I have a special place for whole wheat bread, and taste-wise, it might make me want to call that my favorite one day, but the versatility of this bread is pretty hard to beat. This bread is the bread that I want to make the most often, the one my family asks for the most often, and the one I share most often. I’m not claiming this recipe will yield the perfect loaf every single time, but I dare say it comes the closest for me-and that’s exciting. Maybe the actual recipe for this bread isn’t the most important part, but rather, the lessons and insights learned along the way as I continually hone my baking proficiency. Yes it’s excessive in some way, but there’s an excessiveness to ambition as well. I’ve taken my best sourdough recipe from its most nascent form to its current stage and can trace through the years each change to its formula or process - and I’m sure I’ll be changing things well into the future as it continues to evolve - a work-in-progress. Isn’t that the definition of a craft and the relentless honing required? I sometimes revisit a discussion I had with a few readers of this site and their comments: “bread is just bread, it’s something to be eaten and is something life-giving, isn’t that enough?” I agree, but when something becomes a passion for you it’s important to set lofty goals and get excited when breakthroughs are made. Calling this post “my best sourdough recipe” is a lofty claim, but honestly, I do believe this is the best bread I've made thus far. That’s one of the greatest things about bread: it can taste and look dramatically different just by changing the two hands that create it. This bread is one that doesn’t entirely taste like anything else I’ve had, and yet, still employs many of the same processes and ingredients. It’s taken on and lost traits from many great bakers out there, borrowing from their inspiration and giving me a direction to raise this bread into something of my own. It has developed a personality of its own as I’ve expanded my baking repertoire and investigated the many facets of baking naturally leavened sourdough. My best sourdough recipe has grown since then. Its parent-if you could call it that-was originally Chad Robertson’s Tartine loaf with his liquid levain, brought to life, not with intensive kneading, but rather a series of folds during bulk fermentation. This bread was born when I first got my hands dirty with flour and water. I’ve baked this loaf, or some variant of it, so many times I’ve lost count. Also try drizzling a simple glaze (made with milk, vanilla, and powdered sugar) over them after baking to fancy them up. In the Cu-Zn Kidd Creek Mine, the presence of SRP corresponded to the enrichment of pyrite in the sediments ( Fortin and Beveridge, 1997), while in the Zn-Pb Piquette mine, only sphalerite (ZnS) precipitated in a SRP-rich biofilm to the exclusion of other metal sulfides ( Labrenz et al., 2000 Druschel et al., 2002 Labrenz and Banfield, 2004). There are few environmental studies closely linking microbial sulfate-reducing activity and specific sulfide minerals, even though it has been 100 years since the first suggestion that SRP might be responsible for metal sulfide ore formation ( Siebenthal, 1915). Although black sulfide precipitates in anoxic sediments are used as an indicator for the presence of SRP, their abundance isn't necessarily linked to large metal sulfide deposits. SRP are present in an enormous diversity of environments including freshwater ( Ramamoorthy et al., 2009 Sass et al., 2009), hypersaline ( Foti et al., 2007), hydrothermal sediment ( Jørgensen et al., 1992), polar ( Ravenschlag et al., 2000 Karr et al., 2006), and oceanic crust ( Robador et al., 2015) habitats. Ninety-seven percent of the sulfide produced on Earth is attributable to the activity of sulfate-reducing prokaryotes (SRP) in low-temperature environments ( Trudinger et al., 1985 Rickard, 2012b), while the remaining three percent are produced at volcanoes and deep-sea hydrothermal vents ( Elderfield and Schultz, 1996 Andres and Kasgnoc, 1998). In these low-oxygen environments, sulfur and iron can be immobilized in the form of iron sulfide minerals, primarily the iron(II) monosulfide mackinawite (tetragonal FeS), the iron(II,III) sulfide greigite (Fe 3S 4), and the iron (II) disulfide pyrite (FeS 2) ( Schoonen, 2004 Rickard, 2012a, c). Sulfate is the dominant sulfur species at 28 mM in the modern oxic oceans, while reduced sulfur species, including hydrogen sulfide and organosulfur compounds, are often abundant where oxygen is low or absent. Microorganisms can take advantage of this diversity of oxidation states for energy conservation, which can be achieved by: (1) coupling the oxidation of organic compounds or dihydrogen to the reduction of oxidized organic and inorganic sulfur compounds (e.g., dimethyl sulfoxide, sulfate, elemental sulfur, and thiosulfate) ( Widdel and Bak, 1992 Rabus et al., 2013) (2) disproportionating elemental sulfur, thiosulfate and sulfite ( Bak and Pfennig, 1987 Thamdrup et al., 1993) and (3) oxidizing organosulfur compounds, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur, sulfite, and thiosulfate chemosynthetically with oxygen and nitrate during respiration, or by anoxygenic photosynthesis ( Jørgensen and Nelson, 2004). Much of the interest in sulfur is due to its redox versatility-from sulfide (−2) to sulfate (+6), with numerous redox transformations possible in between ( Zopfi et al., 2004). In Earth's biosphere, sulfur may be gaseous (e.g., sulfur dioxide), dissolved (e.g., sulfide, polysulfides, thiosulfate, sulfite, or sulfate) or solid (e.g., metal sulfides, elemental sulfur). Though the sulfur cycle was the first elemental cycle to be studied ( Beijerinck, 1895), research on sulfur biogeochemistry is far from complete, and novel aspects of sulfur's transformations on Earth are still being discovered ( Canfield et al., 2010). While iron is one of the most abundant elements on Earth, sulfur represents < 1% of the Earth by mass ( Allègre et al., 1995), although its importance to life and earth systems is greater than its abundance would suggest. Throughout Earth's history the burial of solid phases of Fe and S has controlled the redox state of Earth's surface environments ( Berner, 1984). These inquiries have revealed the need for additional thorough, mechanistic and high-resolution studies to understand microbially mediated formation of a variety of sulfide minerals across a range of natural environments.Ĭo-Occurence of Microorganisms and Sulfide Minerals in Nature We discuss whether biologically derived minerals are distinguishable from abiotic minerals, possessing attributes that are uniquely diagnostic of biomineralization. We summarize the evidence that links sulfur-metabolizing microorganisms and sulfide minerals in nature and we present a critical overview of laboratory-based studies of the nucleation and growth of iron sulfide minerals in microbial cultures. Here we review the role of microorganisms in the precipitation of extracellular iron sulfide minerals. Iron sulfide mineralization in low-temperature systems is a result of biotic and abiotic processes, though the delineation between these two modes of formation is not always straightforward. 1Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, USA. Liquid ingredients are pulled through small holes in the spinning disc, aerating and emulsifying them, while firmer ingredients like ice, fruit, and herbs are agitated but not puréed. The Aer’s incredible speed and versatility are made possible by a deceptively simple innovation: the patent-pending Aer disc. Cleaned up so fast, I had everything done, washed, sliced, ingredients in, blend and cleaned, bottled and put away in about 15 minutes. Now I need to test seriously reducing the sugar amount and seeing how large the ginger chunks can be to make this work.Master whipping, muddling, foaming, and emulsifying with the Vitamix Aer Disc Container, one of the most versatile blender attachments on the market. All I had to do was strain it in to a jar and I was ready for gingerale. 5 minutes later it was awesome ginger syrup. Then 2 cups water, 1.5 cups sugar and a heaping 3/4 cup sliced ginger in to the AER. Anything else I make in it is a bonus.I wasn’t sure if the 5 minutes at high speed was enough to extract the ginger flavor including the real spicy-ness I love, but it does! It made fantastic ginger syrup! I threw the ginger in to the food processor and sliced it up. I bought the AER specifically to make gingerale. I used to make it all the time but it takes so long, but mostly involves more clean up than I want, so I stopped. I make my own syrups for sodas so I thought this might be helpful, but not so much I’d buy one. I don’t drink coffee so I don’t know what the foamy milk thing is and I don’t like Mojitos, but I bought an AER anyway. I’m pretty sure that I can make just as good of whipped cream, mayonnaise, and hollandaise sauce with the standard blending container. Turning the blender gradually all the way to 10 may work with fruit added to the whipped cream, but with the cream by itself, it splatters everywhere, and the top portion remains un-whipped, while the bottom potion starts to turn to butter.Overall: With everything the way it is now, regarding the app interfacing, lack of recipes, and unusable programs available with the Ascent, I would never buy this again if I had a do-over. I needed a recipe to take the guesswork out of that (which I luckily found in a QVC demonstration). A good example of this is that it would have taken many failed attempts at whipped cream before I figured out that I needed to only turn the speed up to 5. Vitamix will tell you that they want you to come up with your own recipes, which is ridiculous, considering the fact that this doesn’t operate like a usual blender, and would require quite a bit of experimentation/wasted ingredients. In addition, there are very few recipes (10 or 11, if I’m not mistaken) that come with this container. dry container, and won’t send any recipes to it. Also, there are absolutely no recipes in the app for this container or interfacing between the app and the blender when this container is attached to the blender. In fact, none of the programs on the A3500 work with this container, although the only other reasonable one that could work besides self-clean might be the soup program.2. It says it’s not allowed with that container. I remain optimistic about these two possibilities. The bad:1.With this container, the self clean program doesn’t work with the Ascent blenders. I will try to update this after trying mayonnaise and meringue. And if you like tons of fruit chunks/pulp in your lemonade, it’s great at making that (conversely, if you don’t, you’ll want to use a different method). Hollandaise is extremely easy and turns out pretty well. I have used this container multiple times now, and here are my thoughts:The good: It makes the easiest whipped cream, although you may need to turn your blender to setting 5-6 or for approximately 2 cups of cream.
